am/not
Thursday, September 30, 2010do you define yourself?
and if you do, do you define yourself in the positive or in the negative?
(according to what you are or what you are not?)
[I am(among other things): a listener, a coffee.er, a reader, a thinker, a laugher, a writer, an exercise.er, a red.winer, a hand.holder, a traveller, a baker. I am not: a conflict.er, a map.reader, a technology.er, a public.speaking.er, an iron.er]
But even as I write my list, I feel constrained by it.
I feel an Attack of the Yeh.Buts.
Yeh.But: sometimes I am the things I’m not and I’m not the things I am (sometimes my sense of direction is super!)
I prefer to avoid such stark definitions of self, to have fewer expectations, to adopt a more fluid approach.
(but sometimes I forget).
