Be Goals [and making them work]
Monday, June 12, 2017As a coach, I often hear Be Goals: I want to be happier/less stressed/kinder/more confident [that kind of thing].
Being more the way you want to be is incredibly important. But Be Goals like this can be tricky because the terms they rely on tend to be amorphous and often mean different things to different people.
If you’re currently aiming for a Be Goal, you might like to consider tweaking your focus a little, to increase the likelihood that you will achieve your aim and to boost the chances of you knowing when you have.
Start by considering this equation: I want to be X, which will be evidenced by Y.
Let’s say your your Be Goal is: Be more confident
The next step is to identify your Do Goals:
- I want to be more confident, which will be evidenced by the fact that I apply for that job.
- I want to be more confident, which will be evidenced by the fact that I present to the partners.
- I want to be more confident, which will be evidenced by the fact that I pitch my idea.
Now your task is to design Action Steps for each Do Goal.
A Be Goal on it’s own can leave you floudering, aimlessly. But identifying Do Goals and Action Steps lets you know exactly what needs to be done and how you’ll know when you’ve achieved it.
Top notch.
