The best life-satisfaction test
Monday, November 13, 2017There are a whole lot of surveys and tests and questionnaires out there, designed to ascertain how ‘well’ you are living your life. Often you have to sign up or download and pay and in return you receive an ‘expert’ report on how you’re faring.
The thing is, I think most people already know, or have ways to work out, lots of that stuff themselves.
One of the best life-satisfaction tests is ridiculously simple and completely [sort of…ha!] free. All you have to do is:
go on a brilliant holiday and then, the night before you come home, think about how you feel about your return.
We all have a tendency to just keep plugging away in the life we’re living, without putting very much thought into the what drains us and what brings us real satisfaction and joy.
Going away delivers a break from real life. We relax a bit, put our screens away, have [real] conversations with people we love, eat interesting food, see inspiring stuff, go for walks after dinner, notice details, laugh with our kids. We live in a way that is more aligned with who we really are and how we really want to be.
The great news is, those holiday-ways-of-being are easily transferrable.
The next time you get a chance to get away [even if it’s just for a couple of nights] notice how you feel on that final evening. Take a few notes on what has been the best aspect of the break, what changes you would like to make when you return and then, most importantly, what practical steps you will take to make those shifts happen.
