Come and Go
Monday, February 13, 2017Unless you’re a sociopath, you’re highly likely to experience a range of brilliant, lovely emotions as well as a whole bunch of not so comfortable ones.
People often come to me asking for help in making the yuk stuff go away. They hate those internal experiences and they’re tired of fighting them. They just want them to disappear.
But here’s the thing: we’re human. Feeling anxious and scared and angry and sad and disappointed is normal. They’re just feelings. They come and they go. And while they’re definitely uncomfortable, they’re entirely normal.
Most of the discomfort in those feelings doesn’t come from the feelings themselves. The distress comes from thinking that the emotions are a problem, that they represent a personal failure, that they must be fought and eliminated.
As a coach, I can’t help you make those feelings go away. But I can help you change the way you experience those emotions; I can help you shift your relationship with them. Reducing the discomfort that comes with those internal experiences will leave you room to act in the service of your values and goals, to design and create an excellent life.
And [unless you’re a sociopath], that will feel great.
