Confidence Boost
Thursday, December 8, 2022As an evidence-based life and career coach, people speak to me all the time about confidence and about how to boost it.
There are a whole lot of strategies – practical stuff you can do and internal shifts you can make, to encourage greater confidence.
This is one idea.
Situations
Have a think about the situations in which your confidence tends to take a dip. It could be:
- When you’re presenting to an audience
- When you’re with new people and you think they won’t like you
- When you’re doing hard stuff and you start to think you aren’t good enough
Strategies
Then determine some practical things to do in each of those situations, to address the confidence dip.
- Presenting: practice out-loud with someone you trust; decide on one key message you want the audience to takeaway; connect to a higher purpose; find a friend in the audience and imagine you’re just speaking to them.
- New people: focus on listening more than talking (80/20%); have three questions in your head to ask people and encourage them to speak; actively speak to one new person a day; choose a personal strength and rely on it when you’re in conversation with a new person.
- Self-Doubt: highlight curiosity over knowledge; make a list of the things you have yet mastered and google ways to fill those gaps; ask trusted friends for feedback about your strengths; aim to make and record a mistake everyday.
Confidence is something that you have a say over. Consciously identifying the moments that you find the most challenging and identifying and pursuing strategies to address those situations puts you in charge, which in turn boosts your sense of agency and so enhances your confidence.
Terrific!
