The curse of: I’ll Just
Monday, September 11, 2017I hear it all the time: I’ll just.
- I’ll just sit in this confidence-crushing role for six months, until I make bonus
- I’ll just hang in with my life-draining job, until I qualify for long service leave
- I’ll just put up with my boss’ offensive comments, until I’m promoted
- I’ll just stay in this life-limiting relationship until I meet someone else
- I’ll just deal with my partner not pulling their weight at home, until they’re a bit less stressed
All these I’ll Justs represent lives on hold: life-enhancing choices being deferred, in the hope of a better deal.
The thing is – waiting like that is so disempowering. How do you know that opportunity will, in fact, materialise? Or if it does, that you’ll be in a position to enjoy it?
When you catch yourself I’ll Justing, it can be helpful to have a think about what’s actually going on. To reflect on your choices, in light of your values. And then to make a very conscious decision about how you really want to live.
