Discipline
Monday, September 18, 2017In her book Option B, Sheryl Sandberg notes that ‘joy is a discipline’, and I wholeheartedly agree.
I actually think that most of the good stuff [the stuff that people tend to come to life-coaching for] requires significant discipline: self-compassion; achievement; confidence; well-being; balance; and calm.
Often people don’t think that these ways of being require practice and effort. But they do.
- It takes effort to speak gently to yourself, consistently
- It takes effort to go home after work every night and study, for a new career
- It takes effort to take steps that are waaay out of your comfort zone
- It takes effort to put your phone away
- It takes effort to stop, look your kids in the eye, and listen while they speak
- It takes effort to be in the moment, often
From the outside, a Life Well Lived can seem effortless. But actually, that richness and brilliance and courage and joy takes focus and commitment and persistence. It takes discipline.
