Go ahead and ask
Thursday, October 13, 2022As an evidence-based life and career coach, I am always listening out for clients’ resources – the stuff they can leverage to help get them where they want to go.
One of the biggest [and often most under-used] resources is…people!
Whatever you’re aiming for – a new role, more friends, greater confidence, finance for a home, an idea for a business, a relationship, being able to ride a bike – have a serious think about who you know and how they might be able to help. Then ask them.
But…
I don’t know anyone. FALSE! I absolutely dispute this. Everyone knows people. It’s just that you think you can’t ask for their help.
You can absolutely ask them.
But…
It will be so awkward. YEP! Maybe. But what’s worse? Feeling awkward for a little while or staying exactly where you are. Stuck. UGH.
But…
I might impose. Well, that’s for them to decide. Your job is to ask in a respectful way, leaving them room to decline. Their job is to decide whether or not to say yes.
So…
Just go ahead and ask. The worst that can happen is that they will say no and you might feel deflated or embarrassed. Or that maybe you speak with them and it’s a waste of time or a bit awkward. That’s all stuff that you can handle.
But the potential benefits are massive! New information! More insight! Greater confidence! A new connection!
Just go ahead and ask.
