How to: do something scary
Monday, June 5, 2017Most of us have goals that we would secretly l-o-v-e to achieve but find ourselves held back, by fear.
This is how it tends to go:
You think of something you would really like to do [but are scared of]. Then you get put off by its enormity and scariness. Then you feel shit about yourself for not doing it. Then you feel even less capable of achieving the original goal.
Sound familiar?
If you’re wanting to achieve great things but find yourself frustrated by the fear-gremlins, this simple technique might help:
- Take a piece of paper and write the big goal up the top
- Now make a list of every single [as many as possible, break them down if you can] small step you can think of that will move you towards that goal. For example, Start My Own Business might involve steps like: come up with a business name, secure an ABN, get insurance, start up a social media presence, find a cool space to work from, etc…
- Take those steps and order them from least to most scary
- Now, grab a really big piece of paper and draw a giant target in it – made up of four concentric circles. Write the Big Goal in the centre of the target.
- Place your Action Steps on that target, putting the easiest ones on the very outer ring and the hardest ones towards the middle.
- Start doing one action step a day, starting from the outer edge and crossing them off as you go.
Achieving the easier stuff will boost your confidence. And having a bold visual to monitor your progress will encourage commitment and enhance motivation.
Super!
