no place
Saturday, April 7, 2012I went down to the beach yesterday. With My Lovely One.
It was one of those hot days that Autumn throws in, to make you think that in a Strange.Twist.of.Never.Before.ness, we’re skipping Winter [I fall for it every year].
Anyway, I was super excited because it was the first not.working.day that the Two of Us had shared in a Hundred Years and we were having a road trip. I put on my favourite dress and summer hat to celebrate, and off we went.
Naturally, we had coffee before we set out but by the time we Got There, it was time for another. My Lovely One hates queues but I like them because you get to day.dream and listen to other people’s conversations [but only if they’re talking loud because otherwise it’s Listening In and that is rude]. So I was waiting, happy when I heard a half.whisper behind me. A mean.girl half.whisper. As I turned around, I saw two sets of eyes peering up at me.
[Really? A mean.girl half.whisper about my fabulous vintage summer dress and my make.me.happy.hat? Really??]
One of my most favourite things in the whole world is fantastic women supporting other fantastic women: helping each other to be bold and proud and accepting and happy. I believe in a sisterhood that encourages us to be good to ourselves and to each other.
Snide, mean.girl comments have no place in that vision.
I turned back around and faced.front. I took a deep breath, exhaled, stood tall. I thanked the lovely barista for my two coffees.
And then I walked away.
