possibility
Tuesday, June 15, 2010People say that when you’re trying to Work Out What To Do With Your Life you should think about you loved doing when you were a kid.
I don’t get that. I didn’t really love anything more than anything else when I was little. And the stuff I did like doing isn’t really what I’m into now.
More relevant (I think) is what captures your attention now.
But I know that that can be hard to figure out (and then, harder still, to translate into Something To Do With Your Life).
I reckon the most important facilitating factors are time and space: to notice what captures your attention, to see what makes your head jump, to acknowledge what it is that makes your heart expand.
Whether it’s an hour, a day, a weekend, a week, a month or a year…take the time. Escape! Don’t force anything. Just marinate. And see what starts to surface.
And if you find that hard (because it is hard) maybe this is a good place to start:
Grab a newspaper. And a (good) coffee. Sit comfortably. Alone. Exhale.
And then open.
See where your eyes start to float. What your brain starts to focus on. What kind of articles fuel your thoughts. Then take that information, that evidence. And use it as a starting point for your curiosity. Start to wonder. It might just lead you somewhere exciting. (towards possibility.)
