Scared to Start?
Thursday, May 28, 2020Sometimes, as a life and career coach, I speak to people who are keen to do something radically different with their lives but they are stuck, terrified to make that change. The shift seems overwhelming and the enormity of it puts them off.
When you’re in that position, when you know where you want to go but you’re scared, I suggest the following steps:
+ Chunk: break down all the things you have to do, to get to where you want to go, into very bite-size pieces.
+ Repeat: Take your list of bite-size pieces and chunk them down into even smaller, nibble-sized tasks.
+ Draw: Find a big piece of paper and draw four concentric circles – so that it looks like a target. Write the name of your ultimate goal right in the centre.
+ Place: Then take your list of nibble-size tasks and place each one on your diagram, with the easiest could-do-them-with-my-eyes-closed tasks on the outside and the scariest I-would-rather-give-birth tasks right towards the centre.
+ Start: Start, by doing the easiest one on the outside of the target. You just need the courage to take that one, simple step. Then do another. Cross them off as you go.
This process, of identifying your true-direction and moving towards it with courage, is one that is life-long. So keep going and enjoy!
