shaped
Saturday, March 10, 2012I grew up in a town that everyone said was boring. Everyone who lived in that town said it was boring. Everyone who lived outside of the town said it was boring. Everyone. Well, not everyone, but generally, that was the story that was told. The thing is, the town was not really that boring. But since the story told of it was that it was boring, that was what it became. Boring.
The stories told defined the reality experienced.
I am talking to an artist who runs life-drawing classes. She says that everyone can draw, they just think they can’t. By helping folk re-engage with surfaces, she helps them see themselves differently. They might be painting graceful forms but in fact, they’re re-drawing themselves.
Our lives are powerfully shaped by the stories we tell.
