Short blocks
Wednesday, October 3, 2018I have noticed a tendency among coaching clients to hold off on goal-striving until they can find huge chunks of time. For some people, this really works. They’re able to clear huge sweeps of time [Saturday afternoons! Weekends away! A six-month sabbatical!] in which to launch into action.
But for most people that just isn’t realistic. Most people can only find limited windows in which to take next-steps. And that’s fine! Because for many goals, it’s more than enough.
If you only have short blocks it pays to be smart [in a very simple way] with your time, so that you can keep progressing.
+ First: write down the goal. On an actual piece of paper.
+ Then: make a list of small tasks that will contribute to its achievement. Review the list and chunk down anything bigger than half an hour. [So, for example, a blog post might only take 30 minutes to actually write but you also have to come up with the idea, research content and then format it. All steps that can potentially take up a time-block too.]
+ Finally: put your list of 30 minute tasks [and a pen to cross each step off] somewhere where you will see it when you next find yourself flapping around in a spare moment. That way, instead of reaching for Instagram you’ll actually achieve something and feel good about making progress towards an ultimate goal.
