Stop complaining
Wednesday, September 5, 2018Everyone complains. I complain, you complain. Everyone complains. [I think].
I’m hungry. I’m tired. My computer is so slow! Why are we having another meeting? Why did she say that? Why is it only Wednesday? I can’t do that again. My head hurts. That’s so expensive. I have nothing to wear. Where’s my Uber? I hate public transport. My boss is so annoying. It’s so unfair.
You get the picture.
Complaining might offer a momentary release but the thing is, it actually just serves to limit your possibilities.
Focusing on what you perceive to be wrong, on where you don’t want to be means you aren’t focusing on what is right, on where you do want to go. And we all know that approach goals are far more effective than their avoidance counterparts.
It can be really interesting [and challenging!] to notice your own complaining. Just for a day you might like to try to catch yourself in the moment, notice what’s going on and then choose an alternative. The results can be quite profound.
