What if?
Thursday, March 5, 2020As a life and career coach, I often invite the people I work with to play. Play!
They come to me, so serious. And I get it: I get that life stuff and career stuff is serious business. I also know that sometimes holding things tightly makes it difficult to see beyond what you already know.
So I invite the people I am working with to play, to go beyond what is right in front of them. To think more broadly about possibility. To explore the unknown.
A beautiful example, one you can easily try at home, is this:
Occasionally the person sitting with me will answer all of my questions with: I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know!
And when that happens, sometimes I will ask: and what if you did know? What then?
It is a simple invitation – to extend beyond the automatic not-knowing response into the realm of possibility. What would happen if I let go for just a moment? And played with what could be?
If you find yourself stuck, coming up against big, frustrating I don’t knows why not try asking yourself: what if I did know? What then?
