What would be different?
Wednesday, December 9, 2020Sometimes you can know you want to feel differently but you just can’t work out what you need to do, to get there.
As an evidence-based life and career coach, I see this in clients all the time. They want to feel more confident or happier or calmer or more in control or more…something else, but they just don’t know how to make those things happen.
A simple but very effective way to determine some action steps, is to ask yourself the following question: If I woke up one day and I was feeling _______, what would be different?
So, say you’re aiming for happier it could be that:
- You had someone to go out for breakfast with
- Your ankle issue was fully resolved so you could go for a run
- You had a job that felt fulfilling and didn’t dread turning up to
Or if you’re aiming for more confident it could be that:
- You understand much better the stuff you’re presenting on at work
- You’ve found a way to engage differently with that unhelpful internal chatter
- You’ve found the courage to end the relationship that is bringing you down
Having concrete markers for a Feeling Goal means you can actually then go ahead and determine some action steps.
You might join a friends-for-breakfast app or see a physio for your ankle or start with a coach to help with your career direction. Or maybe you would undertake further training at work or start try some simple quiet-the-noise techniques or move back home with your parents.
