Who is judging?
Thursday, November 12, 2020As an evidence-based life and career coach, I often ask clients about what might be getting in their way of making positive change.
One of the big barriers is this: a fear of what others will think.
When a fear of judgment is holding you back, it can be very useful to get very clear on exactly who you’re worried about. Because very often, when you’re contained by a general sense of judgment, there is actually a single person [my dad!] or a small group of people [my colleagues!] whose opinion you’re considering.
So chunk it down, like this:
+ I’m worried they will judge.
+ Who is they? People at work.
+ Which people at work? My team.
+ Which people in your team? My Director.
+ And so? I’m worried that my Director will think I’m not capable.
Once you’ve worked out exactly who you are worried about, it’s much easier to work out exactly how to navigate and address that barrier.
