Your own way
Wednesday, May 26, 2021There is a whole lot of noise out there about success. The dominant narrative promotes an upward trajectory – getting more money, more status, more responsibility, more pressure, a bigger home, fancier holidays. And less free time.
But if that isn’t what you want, you’re allowed to choose your own way. You know that, right?
You can:
- Decline the promotion
- Recognise that you don’t want a side-hustle
- Reject the cult of Super-Busy [which attaches worth to busyness]
- Resist moving into management and instead, stay doing the work you love
- Decide not to renovate
- Stop taking on new clients for a while
- Choose not to enrol your kids in every activity
- Go part-time and not fill that extra time with doing
That’s not to say that these things are bad. Not at all. If it is available to you, it can be lovely to go on big holidays or extend your living space. If you’re interested in leading an amazing team then management might be just your thing. If you’re keen to learn more, putting yourself forward for a promotion might be exactly the right choice.
But that’s the important bit – making it a choice, something that you have consciously selected rather than mindlessly pursued because you should.
